Kimberly Cooper

A talk on the 19th-century Foodways Garden, a representation of food crops that could have been grown by the enslaved men and women of The Hermitage. Learn how these small gardens shaped America’s food culture into how we know it today.

9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., Foodways Garden/Triplex

Pamela Miner

While most enslaved at Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage worked in the fields, some labored in artisan positions. As emancipation resulted from the Civil War, some previously enslaved artisans applied their trades, skills and knowledge off the plantation. Learn about a few of these occupations illustrated by archaeological objects found at The Hermitage.

11 a.m. and 1 p.m., First Hermitage

Kira Sanscrainte

“Alfred Thirsted for Freedom”—Alfred’s Cabin

Alfred lived on The Hermitage property longer than anyone, white or black. Learn about Alfred and his legacy, while exploring a rare surviving slave cabin that also served as Alfred’s home in freedom.

10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., Alfred’s Cabin
