For our youngest gardeners

Children are invited to plant marigolds and take them home, decorate a garden rock, or have their face painted. Families may explore the extensive demonstration gardens to see fairy gardens, flower and vegetable gardens, a "bee hotel," and more to gather ideas for their own backyard. Over 50 exhibitors and Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand to answer any and all gardening questions for the public.

For any age

Local chefs will whip up delicious dishes with fresh produce, while gardening experts show how to use native plants to attract pollinators, and help residents diagnose plant disorders at the UT Master Gardeners of Davidson County Urban Gardening Festival on Saturday, May 19, 2018, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at Ellington Agricultural Center, rain or shine. The event is free and appropriate for all ages.

This year’s Festival focuses on the latest trends in gardening and offers an impressive lineup of speakers from across the state. Free presentations will be given by UT Extension Agents, Master Gardeners and local experts to help the public create the best soil, build backyard green houses, tackle pest control and bring more birds and butterflies into the garden.

New this year, the Chef Tent is the place to be inspired! Learn how to make an energy drink from local honey, improve gut health with homemade kefir, or watch a cooking demo with locally grown produce. Master Gardeners of Davidson County, who are trained by UT Extension Agents, will present how-to demonstrations on container gardening, mastering herbs and flowers and much, much more. And for youngsters, there’s plenty to do at the Children’s Tent including make-and-take potted marigolds, face painting, and decorating garden rocks.

An array of local flowers and vegetable plants will be on sale along with an extensive offering of handmade products by local artisans. Pottery, gourd baskets, breads, cork wreathes, unique planters, fairy gardens, and birdhouses are just a few of the offerings. Experts will be on hand to review and diagnose plant issues, and over 50 exhibitors will be on site to teach about all aspects of gardening including chickens, beekeeping, and composting. Tasty eats and beverages will be available for purchase from local food trucks.

The Urban Gardening Festival takes place in the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at 5201 Marchant Drive, Nashville, TN on the grounds of the Ellington Agricultural Center, rain or shine.
