Guerro Conducts Bernstein with the Nashville Symphony

*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 03/06/2020
Dedicated to the memory of John F. Kennedy, Bernstein’s Symphony No. 3 incorporates the Jewish prayer of mourning, the Kaddish. More than five decades after its premiere, it remains a powerfully moving exploration of human spirituality and a transcendent plea for peace – all brought vividly to life by Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero, full orchestra, adult chorus, children’s chorus, soprano and narrator.

Like Bernstein, Kurt Weill may be best known as a composer for the theater, and his Violin Concerto likewise showcases his unique sensibilities as a composer for the concert stage. Nashville Symphony concertmaster Jun Iwasaki will take center stage as soloist on a technically dazzling part that contrasts strikingly with Weill's imaginatively scored backdrop of wind instruments. Opening the concert is Adjustable Wrench, a lively piece by contemporary composer Michael Torke, whose own work — like Bernstein’s and Weill’s — incorporates the influences of jazz and popular music.
