SUMMER JUNIOR FARM APPRENTICE at Pip and Pickles Farm - A New Leaf

A unique summer opportunity for 10-14 year olds. Led by staff with extensive experience in both the farming and animal care/zoo worlds, Junior Farm Apprentices will take on some of the responsibilities of the farm along with camp activities such as hiking, creek walks, games, and more! Junior Farm Apprentices will spend the morning learning how to take care of goats and chickens, advanced animal training, cooking, and running a small farmer’s market, care for our vegetable garden, harvest, and maintain organic growing standards.

Each week will also feature a video conference or similar learning opportunities with veterinarians, zoo and farm professionals, and other industry experts. In the afternoon, they will have a choice to join a camp activity or to continue with a personal farm project of their own interest. 

Our junior apprentice will be trained in small groups to acquire the following skills":

List of basic skills

  • Animal husbandry

  • Basic animal training

  • Construction

  • Project planning/implementation

  • Plant biology

  • Organic farming basics

  • Planting, harvesting, and plant care

  • Basic watershed care and water management

 

Potential add-on skills based on interest

  • Social media managing (farmers market)

  • Finance practice (farmers market)

  • Advanced animal training

  • Basic veterinary care

  • Teaching and leadership

  • Public speaking

  • Mural or outdoor art

  • Nature and place-based writing and journaling

  • Whole food cooking and baking

  • Advanced watershed care

    All Apprentices will be given a Skills Checklist based on youth farm skill guidelines which they can complete throughout their time on the farm.

  2. June 7 to 11, $270

  3. June 14 to 18, $270

  4. June 21 to 25, $270

  5. June 28 to July 2, $270

  6. July 12 to 16, $270

  7. July 19 to 23, $270
