Objects are a key part of many stories, from a discovered treasure map that leads adventurers on a quest, to a genie's lamp or a golden ticket in a chocolate bar. Even our
own household possessions are often attached to great stories from both our families and ourselves. After reading the mentor text "Henri's Hats" by Mike Wu, student writers
are invited to use a possession they own, or wish they did, to inspire creative work based around tangible objects.

Creative work often comes from viewing an idea in a new and exciting way. One of the best examples of this is the shadow art by Belgian filmmaker Vincent Bal. Student writers view his shadow art and discuss how he utilizes shadows to see something within his own imagination. They are then invited to create their own shadow art. After they have completed an art piece, they are asked to write a story, poem, or personal reflection inspired by it.

Idioms and old sayings are found throughout the conversations people have everyday. But what if these strange phrases were to be treated literally? After reading the mentor text "Catch My Breath" by Paul Briggs student writers are asked to brainstorm a list of idioms. Then they are invited to select the one that they feel they can create the most creative work
from and compose a story, poem, song, etc. that derives from taking an idiom literally.
