Alive’s week-long Creative Hearts Camp provides campers opportunities to explore their creativity through a variety of expressive arts and community-building activities with peers who have experienced the death of a special person.
Engaging with the creative arts can be a powerful healing experience for people coping with grief and loss. Over five days, campers will explore traditional healing arts including visual arts, movement, poetry/writing, and theater arts, cumulating in an informal showcase for family, friends, and guardians. In addition to providing a creative space for each camper to express their unique selves and build their self-confidence, reflective small group sessions with licensed grief counselors teach coping skills and a space to discuss challenging emotions. Finally, campers will apply their new skills to a service-led enrichment project for Alive Hospice.
Campers will :
- Collaborate and work on individual projects in a variety of expressive arts (visual arts, movement, poetry/writing, and theater arts).
- Attend unique workshops with local teaching artists.
- Receive support from grief counselors and volunteers via small group sessions.
- Experience a service-led volunteer activity.
- Learn mindfulness techniques to promote coping and emotional regulation
Program Details:
- July 11th – July 15th. Camp runs Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm. Registration opens: May 1, 2022 at latest. Early drop off and aftercare provided.
- Offered for grades 8 – 12 (Approx. 12–17-year-olds).
- Cost is $150 per camper, with reduced fees for additional siblings.
- Before (opens at 8:00 am) and aftercare (closes at 5:30 pm) available for an additional fee ($50).
- Scholarships are available.
- Lunch and snacks are provided free of charge.
