Join us for an exciting full day of performances, art making, music, and more celebrating the exhibitions María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold, LaJuné McMillian: The Portal’s Keeper—Origins, and Journey through Japan: Myths to Manga.

Schedule of Events

  • Activity: Charm Boxes (Studio A)
    Decorate a special wooden keepsake box inspired by María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold.
 
  • Activity: Koi Windsocks (Studio B)
    Create a paper fish to dance in the wind inspired by Journey through Japan: Myths to Manga.
 
  • Activity: Kokeshi Dolls (Studio C)
    Create a traditional Japanese wooden doll to look just like you inspired by Journey through Japan: Myths to Manga.
 
  • Glass Blowing Demonstrations (Turner Courtyard)
    The Music City Mobile Unit is a glass studio on wheels, owned and operated by Blaine Steiner and Samuel Spees. This traveling creative space is dedicated to demonstrating the art of glassblowing and developing a relationship between makers and the public. With experienced artisans at the helm, MCMU promotes artistic expression and community engagement, bringing the magic of glass art directly to neighborhoods, schools, and festivals. By merging artistry with accessibility, the Music City Mobile Unit fosters a deeper appreciation for this captivating craft while inspiring creativity in every stop along its journey.
 
  • Mochi Pounding (Turner Courtyard)
    Mochi pounding is a communal event in Japan that often takes place in the winter around the New Year’s holiday. Specially prepared rice is placed in a wooden or stone bowl called an usu. Participants then take turns hammering the rice using wooden mallets called kine. One to three people hammer the mochi, with someone by the usu rotating the lump of rice so it is evenly pounded. When finished, the rice is formed into dumplings and shared with everyone.
 
  • New Challenger: Fighting Game Demos (Rechter Room)
    Come join API Middle Tennessee to try out a few fighting games! There will be different games on rotation for you to try out while learning about the Japanese arcade scene. There will also be pop-up competitions throughout the day. Players of all skill levels are welcome!
 
  • Japanese Calligraphy (Turner Courtyard)

1:30–2:30 p.m.

Performance: Sunrise Latin Band (Auditorium)
Sunrise Latin Band is a musical group from of Nashville led by Melvin Macias who plays salsa, merengue, cumbia, bachata, cha-cha-cha, and much more.

They offer audiences a variety of rhythms from Cuba, Dominican Republic, and South America.
1:30–2:30 p.m.

Docent-Guided Tour: Journey through Japan: Myths to Manga (Upper-Level Galleries)

2:30–3:30 p.m.

Docent-Guided Tour: María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold (Ingram Gallery)
3:30–4:00 p.m.

Performance: Nashville Taiko (Auditorium)
Nashville Taiko is our state’s first taiko group. The ensemble formed just earlier this year but has already performed in numerous cities within Tennessee and beyond. They celebrate music and movement grounded in traditional Japanese drumming and infused with diverse creativity.
