The Plantation Business at The Hermitage

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 09/17/2017
Plantations such as The Hermitage were not just homes – they were businesses. Operating The Hermitage as a cotton plantation required significant management skills of not only the master, but the mistress, and depended on the slavery system to turn a large profit. Stop by and learn about the operations of The Hermitage with Sarah Jackson, the President’s daughter-in-law who came to live and manage much of the plantation for 56 years. Guests will also get to learn about the agriculture of middle Tennessee, as well as the business of slavery and its devastating impact on the men and women who were enslaved.
