A Word From the Principal
Every educational institution desires to prepare their students to be 21st century learners. At Saint Matthew, the community understands learning is a lifelong pursuit. However, in Catholic education, pursuit of learning is anchored in faith. Therefore, issues like social media, ethical dilemmas, and vocational pursuits are all examined through the lens of faith. The school not only wants SMS students to be 21st century learners, but 21st century saints. We are developing students who desire to use their God-given gifts and talents to serve their community and grow in their relationship and understanding of the Divine. Now in its twentieth year, Saint Matthew School, its students, faculty, and families strive to seek knowledge, model Christ, and serve others. This is accomplished through a partnership between parents, the parish, and the school community.
As the principal of Saint Matthew School, I am thankful for the hard work and dedication of the teachers and the principal who preceded me. I am proud of the young men and women this great school is producing. I am grateful to the families who have chosen to partner with Saint Matthew in the development and formation of their child. I am grateful for our students’ desire to ignite their curiosity and apply it to their studies in and out of the classroom. Finally, I am grateful for our community’s willingness to accept the invitation to Christ’s call.
Due to the combined effort of our students, faculty and staff and the SMS community, Saint Matthew was named a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School. Out of the 130,000 public and private schools in the country, only 342 schools received the 2017 Blue Ribbon Award, placing SMS in the top 0.3% of schools who received this coveted award. Needless to say, this is a very big honor; one that I’m quite proud of and one that I know is very well deserved by our outstanding teachers and staff who work each day to provide the best possible education for your children. It is also a testament to the hard work our students, families and SMS community put in each day to continually seek knowledge, even in the face of challenging content and material.
With the education and preparation our students are receiving at SMS, our graduates have chosen diverse paths and are succeeding. The education and formation they have received have allowed them to use their gifts to serve their faith and community. They are now pursuing their passions as teachers, medical school students, business leaders, missionaries, officers in the US Armed Services, and the Peace Corps. SMS graduates have attended schools such as Vanderbilt, Ohio State, Villanova, Notre Dame, Air Force Academy, University of Tennessee Knoxville, University of Tennessee Chattanooga, Duke, Pepperdine, Clemson, Louisiana State University, and Belmont.
